How Canadians do their Christmas tree !

So we were on the highway to Calgary when the car started to slow down and make a noise of washing machine!
We first thought that we had lose the gearbox ... we panicked a moment ... then after a check on the side of the road, we realized that only the 5th gear didn't work. So we continued to drive slowly in 4th, in order to not break anything else, listening carefully our noise of washing machine and panicking regularly at every new unknown clang!

We finally arrived in Calgary where we been straigt to a mechanic. After a good inspection, they said it will cost between 4000 and 7000 dollars, maybe a little more ... but as long as the box speed is not open on the ground, we can not know exactly!
This story of 5th speed at 7000 Dollars do not really suit us ! We don't have a work visa in Canada, so it will be difficult to get back the budget.
We didn't really have the choice if we wanted to keep driving ... we thought to sell the car and keep going by foot or bike .... why not?

While we were considering a plan B, Ivan asked for help on a 4x4 forum (http://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/hzj75-help-needed-near-calgary-ab-canada.826631/ ) ... and 24 hours later Rusty send us a message saying that him and his girlfriend lives four hours above Calgary, that we can stay at their place, and  they can help us to repair Sputnik as they have a well equipped garage and a hoist.

The next morning we took the road to Edmonton, always in 4th gear, slowly ... very slowly ... getting frights every time a truck overtake us.
It took us 10 hours for 400 km, a record! Remember us Mongolia...

When we arrived in the countryside, North of Edmonton, Tyler and Charla were waiting for us. They are both big fans of Land Cruiser and they have an impressive collection! They rebuild and repaired their cars, all by themselves ... I think we're in good hands! And in addition they are amazing people:generous and funny... We had a lot of fun together.
In a way, we were happy to break down here, it allowed us to meet them! After, we don't have to break something, every time we want to meet someone !!

Especially 5th gear is not a small matter. During the weekend, Tyler and Ivan put down the transfer box and gearbox on the ground. The car was scattered in dozen of bearings, gears and nuts stored in ziplock bags. It was a little weird and scary ... but the guys were doing well, found the problem quickly: the axe that holds the 5th gear was cut ... apparently it almost never happen .. .it was really the fault of bad luck!

Tyler and Charla contact their
"Land Cruiser"network  and within few days, we had a second hand axe, and all the parts needed to rebuilt the gearbox and transfer box, thanks Peter!

Guys worked hard, Tyler knows thoses cars very well and they've been fast!
After 10 days, we had a new gearbox,  a new transfer box. They also adjusted the clutch, brakes, change bearings, drain oils, change the timing kit, water pump, rad hoses ... plus all the little problems who traveled with us since a while.
At 420,000 kms, the car is brand new! In better condition than when we bought it!

While we were in the garage, time went and it was almost Christmas. Tyler and Charla spend Christmas with their families but invited us to stay at home with a huge Christmas tree and 400 lights. We also stay with them for the new year. We really enjoyed their company ! Meanwhile Tyler started rebuilt an old Land Cruiser Troopy and we gave him a hand.

For the 1th January 2015, we were all in the snow around a fire, eating grilled chicken wings. By any temperatures, Canadians will go picnic in the forest ! We love that!!

We spend plenty of time with Charla, Tyler, their families, friends and Prado (the dog).
We even been to a hockey game to support the Oilers (a present from them!), called like that because here we are in the oil country.
Thoses guys are awsomes ! Charla and Tyler, not the oilers, even if we really liked the game!
Again thank you for making us feel so welcomed and for saving the car and our trip!! We will miss you ... but we hope to see you on the road soon!

It is now January 7, the cold wave is away. The temperature is rising around -20 ° C, it is time to hit the road ... We are driving with the 5th gear down to Calgary before crossing the country to join Quebec.

Happy New Year to everyone, whether you are: under the sun (we envy you right now!), feet in the snow and frozen nose like us, or just wet (yes we still think about Britany in France! ).
Our resolution for 2015: to try to drive between two cold waves !!

Happy New Year 2015!

La voiture glaçon / The ice cube car...

Suite... (English follow)

Following:

The day we left McBride, it started to snow, snow a lot .... approaching Jasper National Park, it turned into a snow storm!

In the morning after having slept near Jasper, we woke up with ice in the car, a lot of ice in the car! The thermometer showed -12 ° C ... "It's not that cold (we started to get used to it), but it's funny it's a little chilly than usually this morning!". That morning the car grumbled a bit to start. An hour later, we learned at the corner store that was actually -33 ° C ... that's when we discovered that our thermometer was toasted !!

The lady from the store told us that during the next days, temperatures will drop below -40 ° C. Well let's stop the nonsense and take a B&B. While we had our butts warm inside, the car had a bad time: water cans have exploded in the car, everything that had batteries passed away, and the icing on the cake: diesel froze !!

So either we wait for the end of winter that the car  defrost or  we have it tow to an heated garage where it will melt for 18 hours ... we are not very patient and our visa expires in March, so we thawed the car!

Once the car again on the road and avalanches cleaned on the road, we finally crossed the Canadian Rockies. There's so much snow that now, we go everywhere snowshoeing.

Arriving in Banff, we joined Jim and Abbie, two Canadians met in McBride. With them, we explored the surroundings of Banff snowshoeing ... of course!

When the cold wave stoped and temperatures went back to -20 ° C, we found it almost warm!

Now we are heading to Calgary for US visas, in a car that is no longer an ice cube ... and that run ... run ... until we lost a part of the gearbox on the highway!
Critical situation ahead ... to be continued ...
